Protect Yourself

In the October issues of Woman's Day, they share 10 ways to protect yourself against breast cancer and lower your risk ... and I thought I'd share with you.  Your welcome.

1. Self-exams are no longer officially recommended ... but do them anyway.  Be familiar with your body; you can catch something those fancy machines won't.

2. The radiation ou get from a mammogram is minimal.  The new digital machines use about 22% less radiation than the traditional film mammography.

3. Having a drink a day is probably too much.  Alcohol may be good for your heart, but when it comes to your breasts, its another story.

4. What you weigh matters more than what you eat.  Numerous studies have founds that extra pounds increase your risk of postmenopausal breast cancer or having a recurrence.  The more fat you have, the more estrogen your body stores, and estrogen can stimulate tumor growth.

5. If you're at increased risk, taking a preventive medication could cut your risk in half.  Find out if your eligible for preventable drugs.

6. If your mom had breast cancer after menopause, your risk may only be slightly above average.  Your risk is just 2-5% higher than average, so your doctor may not screen you differently.

7. More than 90% of women who get breast cancer don't have a family history of the disease.  Every woman is potentially at risk.

8. Smoking is bad for your breasts.  People who smoked 10+ years were 16% more likely than nonsmokers to develop breast cancer.

9. If you get breast cancer, you may not need a mastectomy or chemo.

10. Just 30 minutes of exercise 5 days a week can cut your breast cancer risk by nearly 20%.  Exercise keeps your weight down, your estrogen low, and boosts your immune system.

Have you ever received an Avon brochure on your door?  Did you secretly hate that Avon lady for doing that?
I'm trying to think of who else does this; most other solicitors would knock.  That can get annoying.  I have been a stay-at-home mom for many years, and I was always a tad paranoid when someone came a-knocking.
But an Avon brochure?  Even if you're not an Avon fan, its still better than a REAL solicitor, right?

Today I was out doing my door hangings.  Its usually a nice time for me; I don't get many opportunities to walk without my kids.  I usually leave a brochure, a sample, and my business card.  I like to go during the day when most people are away at work or running errands, because I'm not so much a salesman.

After returning home I get a phone call right away from an older lady.  She was very nice, saying she received it, then asked if I had a pen and paper.  I'm thinking she wants to place an order - YAY - then she gives me her address and says "you got that?"
me, "yep."
she says "don't you EVER ever EVER leave anything at my door again!"
me, "oh I'm so sorry.  I always look for the "no soliciting" sign and when I see one, I respect it and don't leave my Avon at that door.  I didn't see one at your house."
"well, I should not NEED to put one of those up to get privacy at my own house!"

How am I suppose to know that exactly?
This was an open residential area, no sign in the neighborhood or on her home about solicitors ... ???  I would just think if she was THAT concerned and offended about receiving such a thing, she would have moved to a gated community where that stuff is banned.  Then NO ONE from the outside world could have contact with her.

October is breast cancer awareness month.

I love that most people know this, and also, that so many organizations participate to raise money to help find a cure.

Self exams SHOULD be done monthly.
